![]() The breeding of the fancy Goldfish varieties did not begin until the 1600s starting in Ming Dynasty China. The Goldfish was born at this time as an ornamental pet. They began to keep these colorful fish in their ponds. These flashy-looking new fish caught the eye of Buddhist monks in the 9th century. If these fish were in the wild, they would get quickly eaten by predators since they stood out so much. ![]() Genetic mutations would occur with the carp and these “mutants” would end up with flashy red, yellow, and orange colors. To me, this seems like the safest way to go. Their website has some really great advice on the different plants they sell and because each plant comes with a little plastic label (which you can keep in the tank next to the plant), you can always find out care information about the plant.I love that I can go onto the website, enter the code and immediately find my plant and double check that I’m caring for it properly. One of the common brands of fish plants sold round by me is Tropica. Thankfully, my goldfish are a hardy bunch so they suffered no ill-effects. ![]() When I say I threw it in the bin, I literally did so and with a lot of anger! I had to tell my poor housemate that our darling Sunshine had probably died because of something stupid I had done. I could have kept the plant in a little vase or something but I was so heartbroken that the only place for it was the bin. I was describing the plants in my tank and he mentioned that my ‘unhappy’ looking plant was probably a ‘lucky bamboo’ and should be removed immediately. It was actually a conversation with a friend who also loves their fish who alerted me to the problem. This is the reason I suspect poor Sunshine met his maker when he did. The leaves will rot and the toxins will kill your fish. It could be put in a fish tank, just as long as the leaves aren’t in the water. The reason is, this is NOT an aquatic plant! When I bought it, it was submerged in water and looked quite healthy. For my more betta, Sunshine, it was anything but lucky. This plant is ‘dracaena sanderiana’ or ‘lucky bamboo’. I bought enough for my goldfish and my betta tank. I headed over to Pets At Home and bought quite a few. A couple of months ago, I thought I would do something nice for my fish and buy them some more live plants. There can be serious consequences to buying a plant for your tank when you don’t know what it is. I’ve had all three for a long time – at least six months – but I can’t give them the right care if I don’t know what they are. One is thriving, one is still just about living, and the third I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t last the week. I still have about three plants in my goldfish tank and I couldn’t for the life of me tell you what they are. A couple of times I have fallen foul and bought plants when I don’t know what they are or even if they’re meant for fish tanks. This post is more of a tip than an idea, to be fair. Basically, they’ll sell you plants which aren’t supposed to go in a fish tank to you. Some will sell plants which are non-aquatic or sub-aquatic as aquatic. One of the problems with buying plants for aquariums is that not all pet stores know what they’re doing. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() By 1925 nearly all of the Great Lakes lighthouses that exist today had been constructed, except for Poe Reef Light, Gravelly Shoal Light, and Manning Memorial Light. Of these 1,771 navigational aids, 160 stations had resident keepers, as most navigational aids were automated. For 1925, the Board had under its auspices around the Great Lakes 433 major lights, ten lightships, 129 fog signals and about 1,000 buoys. In the first three decades of the 20th century the Lighthouse Board and the new Lighthouse Service continued to build new lights on the Great Lakes. "The long and expensive process of building lights" in remote and difficult sites "ended in nationally publicized engineering projects that constructed" Rock of Ages (1908) and the White Shoal (1910) lights. Successively, using underwater crib designs, the Board built on a shoal the Waugoshance Light (1851), and demonstrated a "new level of expertise" in constructing of the Spectacle Reef Light (1874), Stannard Rock Light (1882) and Detroit River (Bar Point Shoal) (also known as the Detroit River Entrance Light) (1885). "Worse, regardless of the type of anchors used lightships could be blown off their expected location in severe storms, making them a potential liability in the worst weather when captains would depend on the charted location of these lights to measure their own ship's distance from dangerous rocks." See, United States lightship Huron (LV-103). To that time, Light ships were the only practical way to mark the hazards, but were dangerous for the sailors who manned them, and were difficult to maintain. The White Shoal Light was the culmination of a 40-year effort from 1870 to 1910, when engineers began to build lights on isolated islands, reefs, and shoals that were significant navigational hazards. See Big Sable Point Light for a striking transition and transformation. In the 1890s steel lined towers began to replace the older generation of brick building. ![]() In the 1870s, so as to raise lights to a higher focal plane, conical brick towers, usually between 80 and 100 feet tall were constructed. Until 1870 the most common design was to build a keeper's dwelling with the light on the dwelling's roof or on a relatively small square tower attached to the house. ĭuring the 19th century design of Great Lakes lights slowly evolved. Īs the new century began, on the Great Lakes the Lighthouse Board operated 334 major lights, 67 fog horns and 563 buoys. The 1880s saw more than one hundred lights constructed. In the 1870s, 43 new lights were built on the Lakes. Even as the United States Civil War and its aftermath slowed construction, a dozen new lights were still lit in that decade. The period between 1852 and the beginning of the 20th century saw great activity on the Great Lakes by the United States Lighthouse Board. It is also the tallest lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
